in this book roland barthes explores certain elements of photography and it's relationship with history, theatre, death, nature and media. Something I find myself both drawn to and fascinated repeatedly by in particular is a potrait of Lewis Payne taken just before his execution. Barthes explains, "he is dead and he is going to die...whether or not the subject is already dead, every photograph is this castrophe."
This concept was actually the inspiration behind Delivered...The Dirge Is Playing
